In the same survey, employers said “uniquely human” or soft skills – listening, attention to detail effective communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills – are among the top skills they look for, but they have a hard time finding the right candidates. Recognizing the need for more career assistance and soft skills development to aid the transition from college to career, Cengage has added a free Career Center for subscribers of Cengage Unlimited, the first all-access subscription for higher education course materials. The Career Center allows students to explore careers, assess their skills, build resumes and access career-readiness support, including in-demand soft skills training. “The primary reason most students go to college is to get a job,” said Michael Hansen, CEO, Cengage. “If we want to help students reach that goal, we must offer affordable access to quality learning materials that help them build the required skill set to bridge the gap from college to the workforce.” The Career Center allows students to explore career paths available to them and discover important job facts, such as salary, growth trends and the skill sets employers are looking for. Students can also access career-readiness tutorials – 10-minute, self-paced modules – to brush up on the top employer requested soft skills and to get advice and practical tips on the job search and interview process. Resume and portfolio-building tools are also available. Cengage Unlimited offers complete access to more than 22,000 digital course materials, including eBooks, online homework access codes and study guides. Students pay one price – $119.99 a semester ($179.99 a year) —no matter how many materials they use. More than 500,000 U.S. college students have already subscribed to Cengage Unlimited since it became available in August 2018. Students are expected to save $60 million in the 2018-19 academic year. ACTA Launches HowCollegesSpendMoney.com https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//acta-launches-h-565664806.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//acta-launches-h-565664806.htm 01/31/2019 2:12:34 PM -A groundbreaking public online resource will help higher education leaders confront the exploding costs of college- WASHINGTON, DC—The American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) announced that it has launched HowCollegesSpendMoney.com, an innovative gateway into a vast trove of data on college spending across the country. The public launch took place on January 30 in a packed room of higher education policy makers and governing board members at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. HowCollegesSpendMoney.com provides unprecedented ease of access to financial information and spending trends from 1,500 public and private colleges and universities. Visitors can select specific colleges and instantly access eight years of their administrative and instructional spending patterns; compare them with other institutions in their peer groups; research student tuition, retention, and graduation rates; generate reports, and much more. “The dream of a college education has become a financial nightmare for millions of students and families beset with the runaway costs of tuition and fees,” says Michael Poliakoff, ACTA’s president. “With student loan debt burgeoning past $1.5 trillion and student borrowers graduating with more than $37,000 in debt, institutions simply must get control of their explosive costs if we are to safeguard the value of higher education for the nation. “HowCollegesSpendMoney.com is designed to equip college trustees and leaders to be more effective stewards of their institutions,” Poliakoff adds. “For the first time, they can easily arm themselves with critical data to make informed decisions about college spending in the best interests of their students—and the public.” “Those of us who serve on governing boards urgently need solid data, better analytics, and more transparency to face down the rising costs of college,” adds Heidi Ganahl, Regent at the University of Colorado. “You can’t manage what you don’t measure. ACTA’s new resource will be a major tool to help us tackle administrative expense bloat on our college campuses.” “I wish I’d had this website when I was on the board at Maryland. It would have been so useful in the spirit of transparency,” says former U.S. Congressman Tom McMillen (D-Maryland 1987-1993), who served as a Regent at the University of Maryland from 2007 to 2015. New Survey: Demand for “Uniquely Human Skills” Increases Even as Technology and Automation Replace Some Jobs https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//new-survey-dem-564481276.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//new-survey-dem-564481276.htm 01/16/2019 10:20:06 AM Survey shows 73 percent of employers say it’s very or somewhat difficult finding qualified candidates BOSTON—January 16, 2019 — As automation increases, “uniquely human” or soft skills are among the most important skills wanted by employers, although they have difficulty finding the right candidates, according to a new survey. The survey of more than 650 employers and more than 1,500 current and former college students was conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of Cengage, the largest U.S.-based education and technology company serving the higher education market. The survey revealed soft skills are most in demand by employers (by at least 65 percent), while quantitative skills and computer and technical skills were less so (47 percent and 50 percent, respectively). The top skills today’s employers are looking for in candidates include: • Listening skills (74 percent) • Attention to detail and attentiveness (70 percent) • Effective Communication (69 percent) • Critical thinking (67 percent) • Interpersonal skills (65 percent) • Active learning/Learning new skills (65 percent) However, the majority of employers (73 percent) said it was very or somewhat difficult finding qualified candidates, and about one-third (34 percent) say schools have not properly prepared students for jobs. “These results show that we must not underestimate the power of the people factor in the workforce.  Technology and automation will continue to change and replace jobs, but there are skills that cannot be automated, such as the ability to think critically or problem solve,” said Michael Hansen, CEO of Cengage. “There is a need for more soft skills training, both in college and on the job, and today’s learners and graduates must continue to hone their skills to stay ahead,” Hansen continued. “The onus is on everyone – students, colleges, employers and industry partners like Cengage – to make learning more accessible, relevant and affordable.” Students are not having an easy time either: 65 percent say finding a job is more difficult compared to their parents’ generation.  A quarter of students (25 percent) are worried that jobs will be replaced by technology; however, what worries them even more is having the skills needed for a job (77 percent). One in three students believe their education has not adequately prepared them for the workplace. “For candidates willing to hone their ‘uniquely human skills,’ there is opportunity,” said Hansen.   “While employers anticipate that computer and tech skills will be among the most coveted in the next five years, many human skills, such as critical thinking, communication, and the ability to learn new skills will remain important.” For more information about the survey, please visit https://www.cengage.com/todays-learner/career-readiness#skillssurvey. I appreciate her integrity, love her humor and openness about her life. I also love the fact that she’s older than me . . . Go, girl.” — Chelsea Handler, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Uganda Be Kidding Me “I love this woman and her book.” — Mindy Kaling, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Why Not Me?“ If you ever thought, ‘I could be friends with Gabrielle Union,’ then We’re Going to Need More Wine is the book for you. Gabrielle Union is a lot like you and me. While you likely know her from her many film and television roles; her work as an activist on behalf of victims of sexual assault; her smart statements about the place of women, especially black women in the world and in Hollywood; or her status as one of half of the Wade-Union power couple—she’s also navigating today’s world in ways that are all too familiar. She has had to get over her family baggage, go through the wrong men to get to the right one, and push her way past head shakers and naysayers who thought she was less than. In this engaging, provocative, and funny collection of essays about her life and our modern world. Union gives details of her life that go beyond the headlines and social media to show the smart, tough woman she really is. From her younger years as one of the very few African Americans in her California high school, to the harrowing story of her rape and the aftermath, to her navigation of Hollywood, to the role she plays as stepmother to her husband Dwyane Wade’s sons, to the devastating loss she felt over the friend she loved and couldn’t save, reading WE’RE GOING TO NEED MORE WINE leaves you with that feeling of time with a dear friend. This surprising and special book will nourish your soul and expand your mind. Union says, “Throughout my life, I’ve often wondered aloud ‘How the hell did I end up HERE?! Why me?’ Not sure I’ve ever found all the answers to those questions, but in this book I share my journey…the good, the bad, and the WTF. You will definitely need more wine for this one.” With a voice that is loud, personal, brave, and bold, Union demonstrates what it means to wrestle with self-doubt and revel in self-discovery, balancing a glass of wine and a whip-smart sense of humor at the same time. Cengage Unlimited Subscriptions to be Available at Amazon Beginning January 1 https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//cengage-unlimit-561054284.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//cengage-unlimit-561054284.htm 12/10/2018 11:27:23 AM Subscription service offers unlimited access to more than 22,000 eBooks, online homework access codes and study guides at an affordable price BOSTON—December 10, 2018—Cengage today announced that its new subscription service, Cengage Unlimited, will be available for purchase through Amazon beginning January 1, 2019.  The agreement expands the company’s existing collaboration with Amazon for course materials. Cengage, the largest U.S.-based education and technology company serving the higher education market, provides course materials to almost half of the 20 million students pursuing higher education. Cengage Unlimited offers complete access to more than 22,000 digital course materials, including eBooks, online homework access codes and study guides.  A subscription also includes free access to offerings from Kaplan, Quizlet and Chegg, with more to come soon. Students pay one price—no matter how many materials they use.  Subscriptions cost $119.99 a semester (or $179.99 a year).  Amazon expands the availability of Cengage Unlimited, which is already offered at campus and online bookstores as well as directly from Cengage. Subscriptions include print rentals for $7.99 with free shipping. Considering that students spend, on average, about $500 annually on course materials (with some spending significantly more), a Cengage Unlimited subscription can save students half or more of what they were paying previously. Students may use their financial aid to purchase a subscription. More than 500,000 students have already subscribed to Cengage Unlimited in just one semester of availability. Cengage estimates that college students will save $60 million during the 2018-2019 academic year by using the subscription service to access the company’s quality learning materials. “Paying for the course materials they need to be successful often causes students significant stress during a time when their focus should be on ensuring a smooth start to the semester.  By making subscriptions available at Amazon, even more students will be able to access our quality learning materials and realize the significant savings and additional value that Cengage Unlimited delivers,” said Kevin Carlsten, Vice President of Channel Strategy and Operations, Cengage. According to a recent survey, college students say buying textbooks is their leading source of financial stress after tuition.  In fact, 85% of students surveyed said paying for textbooks and course materials is more stressful than buying food, housing or health care. Cengage is a leader in affordability and access to high quality learning materials. In addition to the first all-access subscription service, Cengage was the first to launch a comprehensive print rental program, with nearly all the company’s titles. Cengage was also the first major education and technology company to offer an Open Educational Resource (OER) product called Cengage OpenNOW. The company also actively delivers digital course materials through Cengage Inclusive Access, a business model that offers students savings by integrating the cost of course materials into registration fees. Finally, the company has instituted price caps on its new print editions and substantial price reductions on its eBooks. For more information, visit https://www.cengage.com/unlimited/. College Students Expected to Save $60 Million this Academic Year Using New Subscription Service for Textbooks and Course Materials https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//college-student-559679976.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//college-student-559679976.htm 11/27/2018 9:24:00 AM Cengage Unlimited subscription offers unlimited access to more than 22,000 eBooks, online homework access codes and study guides at affordable price BOSTON—November 27, 2018—After tuition, college students say buying textbooks is their leading source of financial stress, according to a recent survey. In fact, 85% of students surveyed said paying for textbooks and course materials is more stressful than buying food, housing or health care. For the 2018-19 school year, college students finally have some relief – an estimated $60 million of it – by using a new, comprehensive subscription service from Cengage. Cengage, the largest U.S.-based education and technology company serving the higher education market, provides course materials to almost half of the 20 million students pursuing higher education. Commercially available to students in August 2018, Cengage Unlimited offers complete access to more than 22,000 digital course materials, including eBooks, online homework access codes and study guides.  A subscription also includes free access to offerings from Kaplan, Quizlet and Chegg, with more to come soon. Students pay one price—no matter how many materials they use.  Subscriptions cost $119.99 a semester ($179.99 a year) and are available directly from Cengage, online or at campus and off-campus bookstores. Print rentals are available for $7.99 with free shipping. Considering students spend, on average, about $500 annually (with some spending significantly more), the subscription can save students half or more of what they were paying previously. Students may use their financial aid to purchase a subscription. A new, interactive Savings Map allows faculty, administrators and students to see which courses use Cengage at their institution.  The map highlights more than 500 schools to date. “In launching Cengage Unlimited, we made a bold move to offer a subscription service in an industry that has historically been loath to change,” said Michael Hansen, CEO, Cengage. “It is exceedingly rare that an incumbent rather than a start-up transforms an industry.  And yet, the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to Cengage Unlimited—from students, parents and faculty—underscores that our approach to lower students’ costs so they can afford to access quality learning was the right one.  It also works for our business as we are signing an unprecedented number of new student customers.  We are very pleased to have more than 500,000 subscribers already and look forward to reaching more students in the upcoming January semester and beyond.” “To give students more resources at a lower price point is a testament to the company’s focus on student experience, and I’m eager to see how it transforms the higher education system as a whole,” said Bilal Shalash, a senior at the University of Kentucky and a Cengage Student Ambassador. For more information about the new, all-access subscription service for course materials, or to purchase now, visit https://www.cengage.com/unlimited/. To access the interactive Savings Map, visit: https://www.cengage.com/unlimited/map/. About Cengage Cengage is the education and technology company built for learners. As the largest US-based provider of teaching and learning materials for higher education, we offer valuable options at affordable price points. Our industry-leading initiatives include Cengage Unlimited, the first-of-its-kind all-access digital subscription service.  We embrace innovation to create learning experiences that build confidence and momentum toward the future students want. Named a Best Book of 2017 by NPR and GQ: MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//named-a-best-bo-559073385.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//named-a-best-bo-559073385.htm 11/19/2018 9:35:24 AM BY LIZZY GOODMAN *Now available in paperback* On Sale: November 13, 2018 As the twentieth century drew to a close, New York City felt played out as a cultural capital. A flood of new money had turned downtown into a museum of what used to be cool, a playground for bankers and the dot-com crowd. If you wanted the rock-and-roll life, New York City was the last place you’d move. And yet, in the decade that followed, it would serve as the stage for a radical pop-cultural renaissance. How exactly did this happen? In MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011 (now available in paperback, on-sale November 13, 2018), journalist Lizzy Goodman chronicles the rebirth of New York rock through the voices of those who were actually there, playing the music, pouring the drinks, signing the checks, and writing the cover stories. In the early 2000s, the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, the Moldy Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, and others, who had been honing their craft in obscurity, suddenly became reflections of a newly flush, newly booming town determined to recover from the devastation of September 11. As kids around the world began to dress like they’d been thrifting on Avenue A, it became clear that New York had not only reclaimed its signature rock-and-roll swagger, but had also exported this new incarnation of American cool globally. A second generation was eagerly waiting in the wings: Franz Ferdinand, the Killers, and Kings of Leon, who’d all but given up on breaking out of their provincial corners of the world, got the message that rock was back, and used grotty New York clubs as launching pads on their way to selling out arenas around the world. MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM explores how during this era the music industry was dismantled and then reborn via technology—first by Napster and later iTunes—and how traditional publications like Rolling Stone and Spin were pushed to compete with evangelist bloggers typing feverishly in their underwear, as well as with edgier journalistic upstarts like Vice and Pitchfork. Meanwhile, as the reshaping of the city—technological, aesthetic, cultural, and physical—spread from downtown Manhattan to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, bands like MGMT, Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, and Dirty Projectors became the new stars, remaking the idea of New York in their own nerdy image, and helping ensure “I heart Brooklyn” would become the mantra of a new generation. Crafted from nearly two hundred original interviews and curated by a writer who remembers the hangovers herself, MEET ME IN THE BATHROOM follows in the great tradition of the beloved classic Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. Charting the first decade of the 2000s in all its epic and reckless glory, here is a brilliant portrait of a city, an industry, and a generation on the verge of seismic change.   Praise for Meet Me in the Bathroom “An evocative and gossipy oral history…Not only was Ms. Goodman there…but as our revelatory tour guide, she shrewdly jogged the memories of her protagonists…The result is an affectionate, idiosyncratic narrative of the rock scene’s erratic evolution.” — New York Times “Beautifully paced, vivid, informative and compelling… a book primarily built on passion, love and homage – a drawled rock’n’roll sonnet to the music, the bands, the city, the scene, the triumphs, the screw-ups, and, of course, ‘the moment’.” — The Guardian “Lizzy Goodman has produced an instant classic…All the Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Ryan Adams gossip you’ve ever wanted to know is right here in this epic, loving look at a very different New York City.” — Rolling Stone “Meet Me in the Bathroom is the juiciest book on rock’n’roll in years…a thrilling, hilarious, gossip-fueled account” — Pitchfork “The first great history of new york’s 21st century rock scene…thoroughly entertaining…engrossing…Meet Me in the Bathroom is a wonderful reminder that the next big thing can be right around the corner.” — Spin “[A] gossip-fueled, engaging oral history” — Publishers Weekly “As far as I’m concerned this book is one of the truly great New York stories.” — Rob Sheffield, The Village Voice “Spectacular.” — Playboy “In her terrific new book, Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City, 2001-2011, author Lizzy Goodman has meticulously traced the story of that revival” — Paste Magazine “A vivid, kaleidoscopic, extremely fun ode to a moment in time that only just became the past.” — The Cut “Sharp, funny and dishy oral history…Goodman does a wonderful job of sketching out and filling in this singular time and place…It is a blast…” — Austin American-Statesman “In the page-turning tradition of Please Kill Me and I Want My MTV, Lizzy Goodman’s new oral history, Meet Me in the Bathroom is a post-mortem of rock’s last gasp…You don’t read a book like this. You demolish it whole, like a bag of Funyuns.” — Las Vegas Weekly “Meet Me in the Bathroom is an impressive document of the time . . . she’s managed to extract admissions and reflections that are genuinely poignant . . . distilled into a tome that captures the messy, glorious chaos of New York.” — Noisey “It’s the book that anyone who ever listened to the Strokes is talking about: Lizzy Goodman’s extremely comprehensive oral history of the 00s NYC rock scene is hilarious, sordid, fascinating, and infuriating—all at once. The best music history books serve the dual purpose of creating new myths while slaying the ones that were previously lying around, and by that measure Meet Me in the Bathroom is more than a success. It’ll inspire plenty of discussion and debating, and if you’re a certain age, it might just provide a nostalgia trip, too.” — VICE “There’s warmth and kindness…and great stories about people taking too many drugs…A wonderful book.” — Seth Meyers, Late Night with Seth Meyers “[Meet Me in the Bathroom] will make any rock ‘n’ roll fan who came of age or lived in New York in the aughts…feel all sorts of warm and cozy nostalgic feelings.” — BuzzFeed “Full of fantastic gossip and dreamy anecdotes about the city’s last mythological guitar boys” — The Verge “A compelling non-stop wealth of information that will be inspiring to those familiar with New York and not…this read is a can’t-miss.” — Uproxx   ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Elizabeth “Lizzy” Goodman is a journalist whose writing on rock and roll, fashion and popular culture has appeared in the New York Times, the New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Spin, Nylon, Elle, Interview, Out and NME. She is a regular contributor to New York magazine, and is frequently called upon to be an expert guest on VH1 and NPR. She lives in New York City. Photo credit: Katia Temkin. Sage Corps Study Abroad Captures the Essence of Entrepreneurship https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//sage-corps-stud-557993342.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//sage-corps-stud-557993342.htm 11/06/2018 11:10:41 AM November 6, 2018 — In today’s global economy, employers seek and prefer a globally-trained workforce, however approximately 99 percent of college grads have no global work experience, according to Matt Meltzer, founder and CEO of Sage Corps. So how do businesses looking to attract and retain global-minded employees find them right off the platform of a graduation podium? Meltzer created an initiative called Sage Corps in 2013 – a global entrepreneurship program for college students – that embeds students into seed stage startup teams for their mutual benefit as they live, work and study abroad (students earn academic credit) while offering an innovative source of talent in the workforce. Sage Corps sets itself apart from traditional study abroad programs by offering highly competitive program focused on quality not quantity, an internship with global startups in countries around the world in younger startup communities offering incredible opportunities to make impactful contributions to the host companies. Sage Corps, which has now grown to 500+ alumni since 2013, works with technology startups in thirteen cities across the world (including Santiago, Chile; Hong Kong; Mexico City and Dublin), which use tech in some form, whether it be an e-commerce site, an AI/Robotics company or a travel excursion company. Meltzer wanted to fill the gap by giving students opportunities to gain meaningful international experience, bring talent to foreign startups and start building professional connections that can make a difference after graduation. Students interested in interning abroad through Sage Corps come from all majors (technical and non-technical liberal arts students are all encouraged to apply) and diverse backgrounds and undergo a very selective application process so that the best candidates for this unique global entrepreneurship program will have the chance to, as Meltzer describes, “parachute into a foreign country, experience a rigorous professional and cultural experience building a company, and return with a robust professional network.” Past students in the program attend a diverse range of universities across the country, including large public universities such as UT Austin, University of Michigan, and UC Berkeley, private universities such as Vanderbilt, Cornell, and Emory, and smaller liberal arts colleges such as Amherst, Williams, and Pomona. Sage Corps offers impactful work and more robust services: housing, medical insurance, weekly professional networking and social events, an online curriculum (builds hard skills), academic credit, and a powerful alumni program to help students get full time jobs – alums currently work at top organizations such as Google, Nike, McKinsey, Facebook, and of course startups. ECFMG Launches Resource to Help Students Select a Medical School https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//ecfmg-launches--557909072.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//ecfmg-launches--557909072.htm 11/05/2018 9:46:57 AM Philadelphia, Pa., November 5, 2018—The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) has launched a new resource for students who plan to apply to medical school. Designed to assist in identifying schools offering quality medical education, this new resource is a valuable tool for those who are beginning their medical education, as well as for current medical school students who plan to transfer to a different medical school. The new resource is available on the ECFMG website at www.ecfmg.org/medschoolselection. In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the number of medical schools around the world, and there are a small number of schools that engage in spurious business practices. It also has become more common for students to migrate for medical education—attending medical school outside their home country. This situation creates challenges for students who are evaluating schools and deciding where to apply, according to William W. Pinsky, M.D., President and CEO of ECFMG and Board Chair of ECFMG’s Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER®). “With more than 3,000 medical schools worldwide, selecting the right school can be an intimidating task and a significant financial investment,” Dr. Pinsky said. “Our new guide provides prospective medical students around the world with information on the characteristics to consider and questions to ask when evaluating medical schools before applying so they can make a well-informed decision.” The guide covers such important considerations as accreditation status, curriculum, faculty, educational resources, and the structure of clinical rotations. It also prompts students to ask questions about the student experience, consider how schools market themselves, and talk to alumni about their success in and beyond medical school. As leading experts on the world’s medical education systems and their graduates, ECFMG and its foundation are uniquely positioned to provide this important guidance to the next generation of physicians. The new resource is an important addition to the collection of services offered by ECFMG and FAIMER to physicians and the medical education community around the world. About ECFMG ECFMG, a private, nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia, is a world leader in promoting quality health care—serving physicians, members of the medical education and regulatory communities, health care consumers, and those researching issues in medical education and health workforce planning. ECFMG’s program of certification evaluates whether international medical graduates are ready to enter U.S. programs of graduate medical education, where they provide supervised patient care. ECFMG offers a variety of other programs for the world’s physicians and the entities worldwide that educate, train, register/license, and employ them. Ten fellowships of $10,000 each will be awarded. Introduced in 2014, the program is designed to support doctoral candidates who are writing their dissertations. To be eligible, applicants must be an active Phi Kappa Phi member in the dissertation writing stage of doctoral study. All pre-dissertation requirements should be met by the November 30 deadline including approval of the dissertation proposal. “It is an honor to receive the Dissertation Fellowship from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi,” said Malinee Neelamegam, a 2018 Dissertation Fellow. “The ABD finish line is challenging, and the fellowship will allow me to work towards completing my doctoral journey successfully. Beyond the financial assistance, the fellowship provides doctoral students like me the motivation and reassurance of the importance of the work we do.” The selection process for a dissertation fellowship examines how the fellowship will contribute to the completion of the dissertation, the significance of original research, and endorsement by the dissertation chair. Recipients will receive $10,000 to apply toward 12 months of dissertation writing. The dissertation fellowships are part of the Society’s robust portfolio of award programs, which give nearly $1 million each year to outstanding members through graduate fellowships, study abroad grants, funding for post-baccalaureate development, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives. The deadline to submit an application for a dissertation fellowship is November 30, 2018, and recipients will be notified by March 1, 2019. Attention College Students: TD Ameritrade Announces Open Registration for the 2018 Virtual Trading thinkorswim Challenge https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//attention-colle-554253611.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//attention-colle-554253611.htm 09/27/2018 4:09:31 PM OMAHA, Neb., September 27, 2018 – Add it to the resume under “real-world experience.” College students across the U.S. can now through October 1, 2018 register to partake in TD Ameritrade’s fifth-annual thinkorswim Challenge – no trading experience necessary. Undergraduate students interested in participating can gather in teams of two to four for a four-week competitive learning opportunity with many rewarding prizes at stake, including a $30,000 donation to their college or university. “The thinkorswim Challenge was created to help educate and build confidence in future generations of investors,” said Lee McAdoo, managing director of investor education at TD Ameritrade. “The Challenge is unique in that it gives students a hands-on approach to managing money in the markets, with no true risk involved.” The thinkorswim Challenge is offered through TD Ameritrade U, an award-winning educational program for professors and college-run organizations that provides free access to paperMoney, the virtual trading version of the thinkorswim desktop and mobile applications – both of which are recognized as advanced technology for sophisticated traders. Student teams are not only given $500,000 in virtual dollars to trade stocks, options and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), but also unlimited access to an array of valuable educational resources. Aside from 24/7 online trading support, features built into the platform include: access to the TD Ameritrade Network for real-time market insights from industry pros; TraderTV, for streaming feeds of CNBC’s global networks; and an Education tab, which houses immersive courses and daily webcasts to help students boost their investing IQ. “Last year, we had 327 schools in 49 states across the U.S. competing for the top prize, and the winning team ended up seeing portfolio gains of 427 percent,” said McAdoo. “It’s exciting to see more schools jumping into the competition, more students using our education, and ultimately more participants walking away with a new, meaningful understanding of the markets and money, whether or not they take the prize.” Accepting the TD Ameritrade U thinkorswim Challenge To participate, teams made up of two to four individuals who are students at the same postsecondary educational institution must register at www.thinkorswimchallenge.com. The competition is open to the first 2,000 teams who register. Registration is now open and closes on Monday, October 1, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. EDT. The four-week competition officially kicks off on Monday, October 8, 2018, and runs through Saturday, November 3, 2018. The thinkorswim Challenge teams are responsible for managing one virtual portfolio during the entire competition and will do so by placing qualifying paper trades during each trading week. Prizes will be awarded weekly to the top team with the highest percentage gain in the aggregate value of their portfolio at the end of each trading week. At the conclusion of the competition, an additional prize will be awarded to the three teams with the highest percentage gains in their portfolios overall and to their respective schools. Individual prizes include iPads, Amazon gift cards, up to $3,500 deposited into a TD Ameritrade brokerage account, and up to $30,000 for the schools. New Savings Calculator Helps College Students Decide Best Buy for Course Materials https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//new-savings-cal-553070908.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//new-savings-cal-553070908.htm 09/13/2018 9:10:21 AM BOSTON—September 13, 2018—Almost 90% of college students spend anywhere from a few hours to a week searching for the best buy on their textbooks, according to a recent survey. Who has that kind of time? Thanks to a simple new digital savings calculator, students using Cengage products can get some time back as they decide whether  a new subscription service for textbooks and access codes is the right choice for them.  To reveal their potential savings, students simply type in the ISBN for their products. The subscription, called Cengage Unlimited, offers unlimited access to more than 20,000 digital course materials, including eBooks, online homework access codes and study guides.  Students pay one price no matter how many materials they use. Cengage, the largest U.S.-based education and technology company serving the higher education market, provides course materials to 11 million of the 20 million students pursuing higher education. A subscription to Cengage Unlimited, which is available directly from Cengage, online or at campus and off-campus bookstores, costs $119.99 a semester or $179.99 a year. Considering students spend, on average, about $500 annually (with some spending significantly more), the subscription can save students up to half of what they were paying and, in some cases, even more. Students may use financial aid to purchase a subscription. “At Cengage, the days of spending hundreds of dollars on course materials each year are over,” said Michael Hansen, CEO, Cengage. “The old way just doesn’t work for students and that’s why we have opened up our catalog to offer unlimited access to quality learning at an affordable price. Subscription models deliver an easy way to access content that students are familiar with in their daily life. College is stressful enough – buying course materials should not add to that stress.” Students using Cengage learning technology platforms, like MindTap or WebAssign, have the option of a print rental for $7.99 with free shipping.  When the subscription ends, students retain reference access to their key course materials for the first year for free. For more information about the new, all-access subscription service for course materials, or to purchase now, visit https://www.cengage.com/unlimited/. Dating Rules for Freshmen: How to Successfully Manage the Big Change from High School Dating to College Relationships https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//dating-rules-fo-552985479.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//dating-rules-fo-552985479.htm 09/12/2018 9:35:50 AM Dating Tips to Freshmen From A Senior & A Junior SANTA MONICA, Calif. – September 12, 2018 – High school dating is like prep work for the far more complicated and adult world of college dating. In high school, you’re living at home and parents are keeping tabs on who you date. In college, you’re on your own – and that’s a big transition for freshmen for whom dating freedom is a new thing. You get to make your own choices about who you want to be a relationship with, and how intimate you want to get. It’s an exciting feeling, but one that that needs to be approached with some common sense. “You’re not in high school, so if something goes wrong you can’t call your parents to come pick you up or simply drive home,” says University of Southern California (USC) senior Elizabeth Pritzker. “You’re on your own, handling the dating scene for the first time.” There’s plenty of ambiguity, awkwardness and misunderstanding in the dating field. However, it’s important to put your wishes out in the open before getting close to someone (whether it’s a heart-to-heart connection or just a hookup). To get your dating career as organized as (hopefully) your academic career, read these tips from Pritzker and her USC classmate Sam Skalbania. As upperclassmen, Elizabeth and Sam have successfully navigated the dating scene for a few years, so their advice comes from experience. • Choose a neutral place for the first meeting. Think Starbucks or a campus café – and don’t plan a long dinner. “That way, if you don’t hit it off with the person, you’re not stuck there for hours,” Elizabeth says. (You can make an easy yet polite exit when you haven’t committed to a full meal.) Or suggest an activity, like going on a hike or working out together. • Think about what you want, and don’t want. Before you meet your date, ask yourself some pointed questions about what you want from the relationship. “Any answer is OK – it just needs to be about what you really want, not what someone talks you into,” Sam says. “Don’t change your boundaries to impress someone. Stick to your choice.” Maybe cuddling is fine for now – maybe you want to do more. No matter where you are on the scale, get honest with yourself about what you’ll tell your potential partner when the conversation turns to next steps. • Talk. Unlike your parents’ college dating encounters, dates today should include much more forthright conversation about your expectation for what happens post-date. “Be straight about what you want to do – like, ‘I don’t want to have sex with you tonight,’” Sam says. “You don’t want your partner to have to guess what you’d like.” • Use a consent app. When you’re navigating the freshman dating landscape, consent apps are a good way to share your wishes with another person in a way that’s easy and transparent. An app like iAPPROVE, which is designed to help you manage relationships, puts both you and your potential partner on the record about your ground rules. With the app, you can replace vague conversations and guesswork with clear guidelines for how you far you want to go. The two of you can define your partner status (like “platonic” or “casual non-exclusive”), and what sexual activity you’re comfortable with. • Don’t get wasted. This sounds obvious, but in the heat of the moment, it’s easy to get carried away. You can’t make decisions about how far you want to go if you don’t have a clear head. Save the partying for when you know the person better and feel more secure in how they’ll treat you. • Think twice about dating roommates’ friends. On the one hand, your roommates might introduce you to cool people. On the other hand, if the date doesn’t work out, you’ll be stuck with awkward encounters for months. • Don’t “ghost” anyone. Unless someone has been too aggressive or made you uncomfortable,  it’s insanely rude to simply ignore texts or messages from someone who assumes you want to see them again. “Do the adult thing and say you just didn’t hit it off,” Elizabeth says. If you hide and avoid communication, you run the risk of someone bothering you repeatedly, trying to figure out if you’re just game-playing.  The great thing about being clear and forthright about your relationship and dating needs – and getting on the same page with your partner – is that you can relax and actually enjoy dating. “When you feel confident that you’ve gotten the hard-to-discuss stuff out of the way, you can focus on getting to know each other,” Elizabeth says. “That tension about consent and ‘will we or won’t we’ goes away. It makes dating much more fun – the way it should be.” About iAPPROVEAPP iAPPROVEAPP, LLC provides technology solutions to help prevent sexual harassment and assaults. Our application creates greater personal empowerment over choices and has been designed to successfully address the human and legal complexities of consensual sex, assist in the compliance with legislative and regulatory mandates, and create a verifiable and auditable capability for documenting personal choices, decisions and consent. Deadline Approaching for Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//deadline-approa-552816850.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//deadline-approa-552816850.htm 09/10/2018 9:58:38 AM The deadline to apply for a study abroad grant from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is Saturday, September 15. Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, will award 25 $1,000 grants to students nationwide. Awarded twice a year—50 in the spring and 25 in the fall—the grants are designed to support undergraduate students as they seek expanded knowledge and experience in their academic fields. Interested students do not have to be a member of Phi Kappa Phi to apply, but must currently attend an institution with an active chapter. “Being awarded the Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant truly opened doors for me into places I had only dreamed of going before,” said Grace Kinner, a Session A recipient from Berea College. “Without receiving the award, I would not have been able to travel to Mexico to better my grasp of the Spanish language, understand nuances of cultures other than my own, and develop the independence that studying abroad requires of you. I am truly grateful to Phi Kappa Phi for believing in me and helping me to achieve my goals.” Phi Kappa Phi gives 75 study abroad grants annually to students on its chapter campuses. Since its inception in 2001, the program has awarded more than $800,000. The study abroad grants are part of the Society’s robust award programs, which give nearly $1 million each year to qualifying students and members through graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives. The application period for students to apply for a $1,000 study abroad grant is currently open until September 15. Stand Against Contract Cheating on Oct. 17 International Day of Action https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//stand-against-c-552816584.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//stand-against-c-552816584.htm 09/10/2018 9:55:50 AM WASHINGTON D.C., September 10, 2018 – The International Center for Academic Integrity (https://academicintegrity.org) calls on educational institutions and governments around the world to STAND AGAINST CONTRACT CHEATING. On October 17, 2018 ICAI, with sponsorship from Turnitin, hosts the Third Annual International Day of Action Against Contract Cheating (https://academicintegrity.org/day-against-contract-cheating/). The goal is for educational institutions around the world to speak with a unified voice and work together to defeat the contract cheating industry (#DefeatTheCheat) and encourage students to #ExcelWithIntegrity. Tweet this news (https://ctt.ac/89Yxb). Contract Cheating is a form of academic dishonesty where students have academic work completed on their behalf, which they then submit for academic credit and/or advantage as if they had created it themselves. The goal of this day of action is to raise awareness around its existence and the threats it poses to educational systems. As many as 16 million people could be receiving fraudulent certifications on a yearly basis as a result of contract cheating. “Contract Cheating is a growing threat to the quality and integrity of education at higher education institutions around the world,” said Tricia Bertram Gallant, ICAI board member. “Educational institutions, students, citizens, and governments must take a stand against the contract cheating industry, and as educators, we must work diligently to ensure that we are facilitating and assessing learning rather than cheating.” On the International Day of Action Against Contract Cheating, ICAI encourages registered institutions to: – Sign the Pledge – ICAI, in partnership with Turnitin, is committed to bringing attention to this on a global scale. Launching in September, a pledge will raise awareness and drive action about this issue. – Declare Your Opposition – Take part in the International Whiteboard Declaration on October 17. Have members of your organization write their own message about contract cheating. Post these declarations on social media using #DefeatTheCheat #ExcelWithIntegrity. – Advance the Cause – Host events that will engage and inform students, faculty, staff, and leaders about the threat of Contract Cheating. Post your efforts to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook using #DefeatTheCheat and #ExcelWithIntegrity. To register and find more information on the day of action activities, go to https://academicintegrity.org/day-against-contract-cheating/. myLAB Box Announces "Safe is Sexy Back to College Guide: https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//mylab-box-annou-552028530.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//mylab-box-annou-552028530.htm 09/04/2018 9:20:13 AM The First Nationwide At-Home STD Testing Service Offers Reminders and Tips around Sexual Health to College Students LOS ANGELES, CA – With many students starting or returning to colleges and universities, myLAB Box, the first nationwide at-home STD testing service, today announced a number of sexual health reminders and tips as part of their “Safe is Sexy Back to College Guide.” While sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) affect individuals of all ages, STDs and STIs take a particularly heavy toll on young people. According to the CDC, they estimate that even though those between 15-24 make up just over a quarter of the sexually active population, this particular segment of the population accounts for half of the 20 million new STIs that occur in the United States each year. When you factor into account the increasingly popular online dating apps, you’re facing a powerful combination that only increases the chances of STDs and STIs for this generation. The myLAB Box Back to College Guide covers relevant topics to educate and offer students an easier way to take control of their personal health on and off campus: • Safe Sex Isn’t As Safe As You May Think. STIs are not only passed through intercourse. You can also contract them from oral sex and, in some cases, even from kissing. For example, herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhea are three infections that can directly affect your mouth or throat. It pays to educate yourself on the common signs and symptoms of the most common STIs. • Back to School, Back to Testing. A lot of college students are nervous about testing. That makes sense. Teens and young adults are often too shy to go to a clinic or doctor’s office. However, STIs and STDs are a serious health risk. Regular testing is the best way to consistently know your status. One of the smartest moves you can make for your sexual health is to get tested for HPV and other STIs. If you’re too nervous to go to a clinic, you can order an at-home STI testing kit and do the test right in your dorm room. It’s so easy that it leaves you with no valid excuses for not getting tested. • The condom is one of your best methods of defense against infection and unwanted pregnancies. When used correctly, it can offer a 98% chance of preventing pregnancy. While not perfect, latex condoms are also among the best ways to protect against many STDs and STIs. • Other Methods of Protection. There are other ways to protect yourself as you go back to school and back in bed. These include the birth control pill, the patch and the ring, all of which are prescribed by your doctor. All of these methods are designed to administer hormones to your body – via pill, a patch that is worn on your skin, or a ring that you insert vaginally – for 3 weeks at a time, with your period occurring in the 4th week. “Even though you may know your bedroom partners from class, that’s not the same thing as knowing their STI status. College is often a time when students experiment with their sexual activity, have multiple partners and dates, and play it a little loose with the rules,” said Lora Ivanova, CEO & Co-Founder of myLAB Box. “With as many as 80% of infections showing little to no symptoms, you’ll never know if someone is free and clear of STIs unless they’ve been tested. We hope these tips will be a good reminder to college students to practice safe sex.” myLAB Box offers quick and private tests that can be paid for out-of-pocket (and for about half of the price you would at a doctor’s office). These tests take five minutes to complete and are shipped in discreet packaging. You can take them anytime and anyplace. If you live in one of the many states that offers telemedicine, and most do, you can even speak with a doctor and get prescribed your treatment right over the phone for no extra charge. It’s simply the easiest and most convenient way to be tested. To help college students everywhere take greater control of their sexual health, myLAB Box is offering a 20 percent discount for all of September with the following discount code – backtoschool2018. And for students with either a medical Flexible Savings Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Accounts (HSA) accounts, myLAB Box proudly accepts both FSA and HSA as payment options, making its service even more affordable and accessible for men and women in every state. About myLAB Box Founded in 2013, myLAB Box is the first company to offer a nationwide at-home screening platform for STDs. From affordable screening to complimentary physician consultations for positives, every aspect of the myLAB Box service is designed to be safe, effective, and efficient.  By offering testing, screening or testing services directly to consumers, myLAB Box is able to offer exceptional service at half the cost of conventional lab tests. Reminder for students with life-threatening allergies going to college https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//reminder-for-st-549295504.htm https://thenorthernlight.campusave.com//reminder-for-st-549295504.htm 08/06/2018 4:51:22 PM Richmond, VA (August 6, 2018) — Going to college for the first time is abound with many new experiences – new friends, new living arrangements, and a new lifestyle. For an incoming college student with a life-threatening allergy (LTA), new experiences mean new potential threats of a life-threatening reaction. Some surveys suggest that college-aged students are not always fully prepared. A survey of adolescents and young adults aged 13 to 21 years old with a food allergy showed that 39 percent did not always carry epinephrine, and 38 percent did not have epinephrine during their last anaphylactic reaction.1 Additionally, in a survey published in 2009, 287 university students reported having an allergic reaction attributable to food, and only 21 percent of these students had self-injectable epinephrine at the time.2 With the start of the academic school year quickly approaching, Becky, whose son Andy has a severe allergy to peanuts and is applying to colleges for next year, reminds college students with LTAs to: Refill your epinephrine auto-injector prescriptions Refill your epinephrine auto-injector prescription, such as for AUVI-Q® (epinephrine injection, USP), an FDA-approved prescription medicine used to treat life-threatening allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in people who are at risk for or have a history of serious allergic reactions. AUVI-Q is the first and only epinephrine auto-injector (EAI) with an auto-retractable needle and includes innovative features such as step-by-step voice instructions that guide the user through the administration of epinephrine during a life-threatening allergic emergency. Seek emergency medical attention after use, as AUVI-Q is not a substitute for immediate medical care. Always avoid allergens Wherever possible, avoid allergens. Read all product labels thoroughly when grocery shopping and before consuming any item. Major food allergens, such as peanuts, tree nuts and shell fish, are required by U.S. law to be listed on the product label.3 Know the symptoms of anaphylaxis Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially fatal allergic reaction. It can occur as a result of exposure to allergens including food such as peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, dairy, eggs, soy and wheat; insect stings or bites; latex and medication, among other allergens and causes. Common signs and symptoms include red rash, swollen throat or areas of the body, wheezing, passing out, chest tightness, trouble breathing, hoarse voice, trouble swallowing, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramping, or pale or red color to the face and body.4 Always carry two epinephrine auto-injectors As part of your emergency action plan that includes understanding anaphylaxis and recognizing its signs and symptoms, have access to two epinephrine auto-injectors, and seek emergency medical care should a reaction occur. Communicate with relevant college staff to make advance preparations For those who have life-threatening allergies, it is important to over-communicate with relevant staff who will help guide you to locate foods that don’t include allergens. Be sure to work with your college’s dining services and health care centers and/or resident advisor (RA) as appropriate. Some schools have nut-free areas, while many label food ingredients. Prepare an Emergency Care Plan Prepare an emergency care plan. Share it with those you interact with at college, including your RA, roommates and friends. While you’re at it, teach a few people how to administer your epinephrine auto-injector, in the event of an allergic emergency in which you are unable to self-administer. Be prepared and do your research While being away from home and adjusting to college life with a life-threatening allergy can be difficult, with the proper preparation, college students can effectively manage their life-threatening allergies while having a true college experience. All colleges are different with allergy policies, so doing your homework is also important. To learn more about how to be prepared for college with a life-threatening allergy, and to learn more about AUVI-Q, visit https://www.auvi-q.com/resources. Indication AUVI-Q® (epinephrine injection, USP) is a prescription medicine used to treat life-threatening allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in people who are at risk for or have a history of serious allergic reactions. Important Safety Information AUVI-Q is for immediate self (or caregiver) administration and does not take the place of emergency medical care. Seek immediate medical treatment after using AUVI-Q. Each AUVI-Q contains a single dose of epinephrine. AUVI-Q should only be injected into your outer thigh, through clothing if necessary. If you inject a young child or infant with AUVI-Q, hold their leg firmly in place before and during the injection to prevent injuries. Do not inject AUVI-Q into any other part of your body, such as into veins, buttocks, fingers, toes, hands, or feet. If this occurs, seek immediate medical treatment and make sure to inform the healthcare provider of the location of the accidental injection. Only a healthcare provider should give additional doses of epinephrine if more than two doses are necessary for a single allergic emergency. Rarely, patients who use AUVI-Q may develop infections at the injection site within a few days of an injection. Some of these infections can be serious. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms at an injection site: redness that does not go away, swelling, tenderness, or the area feels warm to the touch. If you have certain medical conditions, or take certain medicines, your condition may get worse or you may have more or longer lasting side effects when you use AUVI-Q. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, especially medicines for asthma. Also tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, especially if you have asthma, a history of depression, thyroid problems, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, heart problems or high blood pressure, have any other medical conditions, are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Epinephrine should be used with caution if you have heart disease or are taking certain medicines that can cause heart-related (cardiac) symptoms. Common side effects include fast, irregular or ‘pounding’ heartbeat, sweating, shakiness, headache, paleness, feelings of over excitement, nervousness, or anxiety, weakness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, or breathing problems. These side effects usually go away quickly, especially if you rest. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. Please see the full Prescribing Information and the Patient Information. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA.
